The colossal structure of this 800-year old fort boasts a long list of dynastic links to its name. Barely an hour’s drive from Hyderabad will take you to the heart of Medak town and in less than 10 minutes you will reach at the foot of the 300-ft hillock at the top of which the fort was built. The enormous fort spreads over some 100 acres of hilly lands. The fortress has three main entrances. The decoration and sculptures on the gates demonstrates the architectural diversities of different era.

As you roam around the fort complex, you can possibly discover the ruins of warehouse and barrack that had once been the part of this majestic structure. As goes the legend, the fort had a lake as well.
The Tourism Department of Telengana has drawn out a development initiative for the fort as part of Medak-Nizambad circuit.

Koti Lingeshwara Swamy Temple

Koti Lingeshwara Swamy Temple


This historic temple is situated at  Siddipet, a small town within Medak district and just 45 Kms from Medak town. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and adorned with numerous Shiv Lings. You can round up the darshan by taking boat ride on the small check-dam in the vicinity. The surreal scenic beauty will keep the shutterbugs busy throughout the ride.

Shri Saraswathi Skshtramu


You can pay your tribute to Goddess Saraswathi by visiting Shri Saraswathi Skshtramu temple , situated in the nearby city of Ananthasagar in Siddipet division. The temple was built by Sri Astakala Narasimha Rama Sharma.

Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple

A picturesque Nacharam provides a perfect backdrop to this temple that has withstood the test of time for centuries. Dedicated to Lord Narasimha Swamy, this temple is 12 Kms from Medak. Situated on the banks of the sacred River Haridra, it is also called Swetagiri or Gargeya Thapovanam by the devotees, who pay a visit to the temple and take dips in the sacred river, believing that the holy river will help them get rid of sins as well as skin diseases. The temple complex also has the deities of Lord Siva, Lord Rama, Laxman and Sita, Navagrahas, Sri Anjaneya Swamy and Bhairava among the others.

Edupayala Durga Bhavani Gudi

Edupayala Durga Bhavani Gudi is dedicated to Goddess Durga. The shrine is located at a picturesque site, offering breathtaking view of the seven rivulets of Manjira River. In fact, the shrine is named after the word Edupayalu, meaning seven streams. According the local legends, the temple site was the venue for a grand yajna performed by the King Janamejaya, grandson of Arjuna. The shrine complex comes to life during the Mashivaratri ceberations during spring.

Medak Church

The imposing exterior of Medak Church will leave you in awe. On entering the church, you are sure to be mesmerized by the wonderful designs and paintings that adorn the church walls. The Gothic revival style architecture adds to the beauty and grandeur of the colossal structure of the church.  Built by the British Wesleyan Methodists during the first world war, Medak Church is the largest cathedral in Telengana. Your visit to Medak is never complete without lighting a candle in this church.

In stone’s throw distance from Medak town, there are a couple of irrigation projects. The dam built on the Manjeera river and the Singur reservoirs offer excellent scenic beauty for the nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. The water of these reservoirs is the prime source of irrigation for local agriculture. These two reservoirs also help meet the water requirements of Hyderabad city.
 

Wildlife in Medak

Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary

medak pocharamNamed after Pocharam lake, Pocharam wildlife sanctuary is home to diverse species of flora and fauna. In early 20th century, Pocharam forest used to be the favorite hunting ground for the Nizam. A natural habitat of a variety of two and four legged creatures, the place is a animal-lover’s paradise. The lush, dense forest provides refute to a variety of winged creatures and the vast water body attracting a variety of birds including Brahminy Bucks, Bar-Headed Goose and Open Billed Stork. The forest is also home to leopard, antelope and deer, sambar and nilgai, bear, wild dog and cat and wolf. The deciduous forest also provide shelter to chinkara and chital.

Manjeera Forest

manjiraManjira forest owes its lush greenery to Manjeera and Singur barrages. Situated in between these two large water bodies, Manjira wild life sanctuary spreads over nine small islands. The sanctuary is home to a variety of winged creatures, Marsh Crocodiles and Muggar.The best time to visit this sanctuary is between November to February.

Getting to Medak

Located in close proximity to Hyderabad city, Medak makes the ideal weekend gateway for the urbanites. Apart from private transport, you can reach Medak by bus. Medak Bus Station operates under Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) and buses are available from all major destinations including Hyderabad, Secunderabad, Nizamabad and Warangal. Nearest railway station, which can be availed to reach Medak town is Kamareddy, which is 60 Km away from the town.The best time to visit Medak district is from September through February.
